Marianne Sihvonen (Válbor Máhtte Teresá Riittá Mariánne by her Sámi name) is a Finnish-Sámi performer-composer based in Copenhagen.

She is renowned for her exploration of diverse creative practices and her dedication to contemporary music. Marianne is committed to amplifying the voices of living composers, having premiered works by a new generation of composers, including Sunleif Rasmussen, Ylva Fred, Ville Raasakka, and Lauri Supponen. Her own compositions are an evocative blend of improvisation on various flutes, vocals and electronic elements, deeply influenced by her Finnish and Sámi heritage as well as her family's experiences with colonialism.

A passionate collaborator, Marianne co-creates with flutist and composer Molly Påhlsson as part of the innovative duo MoMa, where they merge improvisation with electronics to push the boundaries of flute performance. Their work was recognized with a scholarship for interpretation at the 2023 Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music, and their music has been broadcast on Danish Radio P2.

Marianne is also an advocate for environmental awareness through her work with the flute and guitar duo HΛV, alongside Faroese guitarist Alvi Joensen, bringing attention to ecological issues across the Nordic region. Together as HΛV, they have toured throughout the Nordic countries, performing at venues and festivals such as the Båstad Chamber Music Festival, INN:PUST Festival, Summartónar Festival, and the Moderne Mandag concert series.

Her artistic journey has taken her across the world, with performances at prestigious venues such as Aarhus Chamber Music Festival, The Art of Improvisation Festival in Hamburg, Nepal Music Center in Kathmandu, the Alexander Theatre in Finland and Phyxis in Providence (US).

Marianne recently completed a Master’s in Contemporary Performance and Composition (CoPeCo) through a joint program at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon and the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, as well as a flute soloist diploma at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. Additionally, Marianne was selected as one of ten international Density Fellows in 2023-2025 for Claire Chase’s Density 2036 project, where she received mentorship from Chase in performing works from the groundbreaking Density series.

Beyond her artistic practice, Marianne works as an executive director for Sonkajärvi Soi Festival and a flute teacher at Den Kreative Skole in Fredericia and Holbæk Kulturskole.
